Recipient of the Bistro’s first Producer’s Award
Andre De Shields and I showing off our Bistro Awards last night. What a great time!!
— Shemekia Copeland
Shemekia Copeland was the recipient of the Bistro’s first Producer’s Award this Monday, March 13, during the Bistro Awards ceremony in New York City. “Daughter of blues guitarist-singer Johnny Copeland, she displays a powerful, gutsy voice that can also be soft and sultry, and has an uncanny ability to connect to her audience with both songs and stories.”
When I went to see blues singer Shemekia Copeland at the Iridium back last December upon the constant nudging of my good friend and Bistro Award director, Shellen Lubin, I was simply blown away by her talent, warm presence, and powerhouse voice.
Because I liked her so much, Bistro Committee members who did not get the chance to see her because of her limited run suggested that I give her an award of my own.
And so I did.
On Monday Bistro night, I was very proud to present the first Producer’s Award to Shemekia Copeland!
Not only has Shemekia opened for the Rolling Stones, sung with Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, and Carlos Santana, she’s performed for President Obama and Michelle!
I’ll be sure to let you all know when she’s next in town!
